Jesús Bonilla Chavarría was born in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste on November 15, 1912.  He played the flute when he was 7 years old. When he was 10 years old, he moved to San Jose and take flute lessons with Don Roberto Cantillano and Don Juan de Dios Pérez.

He was the first flautist of Banda de Alajuela, and years later he was the Director of the Banda de Liberia.

He has composed more than 300 musical pieces, of which more than 40 songs are anthems of schools and high schools. Some of his most popular songs are “Pampa”, “Noche en la selva”, and “Luna Liberiana”.

Because of his achievements, both personal and musical, have been prize winning on several occasions.

He was named “Maestros de Maestros” by The Municipalidad of Cañas, in its centenary year.
